June 24th Campaign Planning Workshop and Heat Wave Check-Ins
Hi Everyone,
In this newsletter we have updates about our public meeting, a building led hot weather check-in program, and are call for door knocking volunteers. Read on for more!
Public Meeting
Our June Public Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 24th 2025, from 6:30pm to 7:45pm. The meeting is being held in the basement auditorium at the New Westminster Public Library (716 6th Avenue, New Westminster).
The agenda for the meeting is as follows:
- State of the Union Updates
- How to plan a Campaign Workshop
Once you have an issue and some people who want to take action, what do you do? How do you identify decision makers, whether it's management, owners, or city hall, and apply pressure to win? And how do you build the base you need to get there? While this training will be focused on campaigns for issues facing renters, it's also useful for anyone who wants to campaign for political change at the local level.
We'll be learning from examples of successful and less-than successful campaigns we've been a part of in the past.
Come join, meet your neighbours, and let's practice planning a fictional campaign together.
Cooling Check-In Sign Up
Are you worried about your health or the health of your neighbours during heat waves? We've put together a lobby sign up sheet and information package on how to do hot weather checks with your neighbours. You can print off the booklet and post it in the lobby to allow people to sign up. For more information and to access the printable pdf, visit http://nwtenantsunion.org/heat.
Door Knocking
Do you want to win the right to a new apartment at the same rent if your building is redeveloped? The best way to win is to mobilize as many renters in our downtown core as possible in support of the new Tenant Assistance Policy being proposed at the city.
This month we have been door knocking every week in buildings across downtown New Westminster to let people know about Transit Oriented Redevelopment, including risks to existing buildings and what people can do to influence policy and keep their homes safe. If you want to win, you can join us, provide us with a lead into your building, or connect us with renters in your area.

Get Involved
Want to join our volunteer, renter-led action team to fight for affordable, safe and stable housing for our community? We want to meet with you! Send us an email at nwtenantsunion@gmail.com or leave a voicemail at 778-358-2680.
We are always on the lookout for Building Contacts who can support the New West Tenants Union's work by keeping us posted of issues at rental buildings around the city.
