We hope you have been able to stay safe and warm out there. We've already had a few queries about the right to heating during the recent cold snap. It is considered a material term of your tenancy meaning that your landlord must provide you with adequate and consistent heating. Within the City of New West bylaws adequate heat is defined as:
"capable of maintaining every room at a temperature of 22 C (72 F) measured at a point 1.5 meters (5 feet) from the floor and in the centre of the room". pgs 11-12.
So if you have inadequate heating in your home contact us for advice in taking the next steps as it is absolutely your right. No one should be paying today's rent prices and suffering in the cold.
Public Meeting Tuesday January 30th @ 6:30pm
We will be starting our monthly meetings this year on Tuesday January 30th at 6:30pm in the Auditorium of the New West Public Library (716 6th ave). Brook will share thoughts about how we can build a network of Building Contacts in New Westminster and what role they might play. We will also have a discussion about networking with other service organizations in the community to offer Tenants' Rights Workshops to the people that use those organization's services. Bring your ideas and thoughts on how and who we should connect with.
Lastly, speaking of tenants' rights, the City of New Westminster is partnering with the New Westminster Public Library to host 3 tenants workshops in February put on by TRAC (Tenant Resource and Advisory Centre). Workshops are hosted in person at the main branch or by zoom, but you must register to attend.
